Bhutto No Saint

I don't want to speak ill of the dead but I'm afraid there has been far too much press presenting recently murdered, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as some sort of populist heroine and champion of democracy. As I somewhat angrily touched upon two months ago and as John Burns recounts in today's New York Times, that is not the case.

Her death was a shame and a blow for Pakistan and American foreign policy in Pakistan; however, we need to keep some perspective. It is harsh to say but perhaps she will serve her country better as a martyr than she would have (or ever did) in life. (Probably, however, Pakistan will become even more of a cluster#%@$. Wouldn't it be great if had bothered to stabilize Afghanistan instead of invading Iraq for no reason? Then we wouldn't have to worry so much about Pakistani extremists.)

Remembrances of Bowl Games Past

The New York Times has a pretty funny article about old-timey bowl games, including the 1962 Gotham Bowl featuring Nebraska v. Miami.

The money quote:
But Nebraska officials held the team’s flight to New York on a runway in Lincoln for two hours until they were assured that a certified expense check for $35,000 had been deposited in the bank. "If I had to do over again, I wouldn't," Nebraska Coach Bob Devaney told reporters before the game.
Gotta love the Bob-father.

Iran Drops the Dollar

clipped from news.bbc.co.uk

Dollar dropped in Iran asset move
Iran is to shift its foreign currency reserves from dollar to euro and use the euro for oil deals in response to US-led pressure on its economy.
I'm not going to lie, I don't fully understand all the ramifications of this move but (in keeping with the theme of this site) I thought it was something you should know.

It is something I've been hearing about for a long time now and they finally did it. Will other countries follow suit (Venezuela)? Will it hurt the dollar (more)? Will it effect oil prices?

Probably not.

But it is interesting, nonetheless.

Presidential Candidates "On the Record" on the One Campaign

The One Campaign has a tool up that you can use to compare the presidential candidates' plans to fight extreme poverty and global disease.

Give it a try. See what they say (and then hold them to it when they get elected).

Germany Seeks to Ban Scientology

BERLIN (AP) -- Germany's top security officials said Friday they consider the goals of the U.S.-based Church of Scientology to be in conflict with the principles of the nation's constitution and will seek to ban the group.

I believe religious freedom to be sacrosanct, but Scientology is a cult - plain and simple.

They brainwash their followers and use intimidation against those who oppose them.

It is a "religion" founded by a guy who had previously said he wanted to start a religion to fool people into giving him their money.

Look it up.

[Plus, how can you take any religion seriously that has "Battlefield Earth" as one of its most sacred texts?]

More on the Omaha Shooting

clipped from www.examiner.com
9 Dead in Nebraska Mall Shooting

The teenager carried his rifle into the mall, passing shoppers and decorations.

A department store employee was pressing a suit for a customer. A woman was making a quick stop to buy Christmas presents before picking up her son from school. Christmas music played.

The gunman stopped on the third floor and cut through the sounds with gunfire. Shoppers and employees at the Westroads Mall scrambled for cover in dressing rooms, clothing racks, offices and storage areas.

Eight people were killed and five wounded before the shooter ended the horror by taking his own life. He left behind a note that read, in part, "Now I'll be famous."

You'll be famous as another nut who shot a bunch of innocent people in a mall in Omaha. Congratulations.

You were a waste of time.

No one will remember your name.

"Go out with style..."

Shoppers killed in US mall shooting
A man armed with a rifle has killed eight people at a busy US department store before taking his own life.
The attack in an Omaha, Nebraska, shopping mall on Wednesday sent shoppers running and screaming for cover.
Pretty %@&%ing far from it pal.

Pray for those people's families, including the shooter.

It is nice to see some people standing up and not willingly cede their rights to aspiring dictators (are you listening Russia?).

Especially when it is this Castro loving $#@%.

Of course, now he will just refuse to stand down when his term expires (ala Pakistan).

Bo Pelini Is Back - Update

The 28th Head Football coach at the University of Nebraska is Bo Pelini!

Which proves that even ESPN is right on occasion.

I really think we are back on the rod to being Nebraska again. Thank. God. (and T.O.)

I wish we played tomorrow!

Good luck coach!

Update: Pelini may coach LSU one more time if the Tigers make it to the National Championship game, which we'll know in about 15 minutes.

I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world to have a guy with a National Championship ring on his finger going out and recruiting for us. Plus, that would be as close to a bowl game that we will get this year.

New Nebraska Coach to Be Announced Today

The players will meet with the new coach at 2:30 (central) and the official press conference will be at 4 (central). (You can watch or listen to the press conference here.)

I assume, since it is happening today, that it will be Pelini.

That's fine, he should do a good job.

I am kind of torn about him leaving LSU before the bowl game. I want him to get on recruiting and building a staff for Nebraska, but I would hate to see Ohio State win a National Championship because LSU's defense takes a hit (probably it won't matter - see Ohio State v. Florida last year).

Anyway, if Pelini is named today, I will be buying two new hats today: 1 (or 2) new Nebraska hats (I've been waiting for 4 years to buy a new one - my current ones are filthy) and a Buffalo Bulls hat. Go Turner Gill!

Besides, Pelini says Nebraska is his dream job but what happens when Jim Tressel leaves Ohio State? It may be an opportunity for Gill to come in down the road. On the other hand, Bob Stoops stayed with Oklahoma when he had the chance to go to Ohio State and Les Miles (Pelini's boss, at least until 4pm central today) is staying at LSU rather than going to his alma mater of Michigan.

So, who knows? If Tom says Pelini is better suited for the job than Turner, who else would you be more apt to believe? Maybe Pelini will stay for 10-20 years. The only thing I know is, I am excited again, I care again. When NU hired Callahan, they tore out my heart. Now I feel like I am getting it back. Forget National Championships, I will never again take a conference championship for granted. I definitely think Pelini can get us there.

But, as I have said, I won't believe anything until Tom Osborne tells me.

(Remember when this blog used to talk about politics and foreign affairs?)

Defense wins championships

Interesting note given the discussion/speculation about Pelini:
LSU was locked in a dog-fight with Tennesee in the SEC championship game today and in the end the game-(and championship-) clinching TD came from Bo Pelini's defensive squad. If Pelini is indeed hired by NU, this has to be good for confidence and for recruiting defensive studs. Never underestimate the power of recent studliness when dealing with impressionable recruits.
Regardless of whether Pelini is hired or not, it is just another illustration that you can have all the gizmo-gadget offenses you want, but you need a great defense to get you championships. But then again, NU fans (and good football fans everywhere) have known this for decades now.

Tom on Pelini Rumor

clipped from www.omaha.com

LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman was reached at the team hotel and said: "I can tell you this, Bo Pelini doesn't know anything about it."

At least one person close to Pelini and the NU program cautioned that there were some details yet to be worked out, calling reports premature. But he did characterize Pelini as the top candidate. ESPN.com also was saying Friday night that Pelini was set to be introduced as the Husker head coach.

"It sure didn't come from me," Osborne said of the ESPN report, according to the Associated Press. "Until we make some official announcement, I wouldn't put much credence in that. There are so many rumors and so much speculation." However, he said "it won't be too much longer."
Again, I won't believe anything until I hear Tom say it from behind a podium.
