Bhutto No Saint

I don't want to speak ill of the dead but I'm afraid there has been far too much press presenting recently murdered, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as some sort of populist heroine and champion of democracy. As I somewhat angrily touched upon two months ago and as John Burns recounts in today's New York Times, that is not the case.

Her death was a shame and a blow for Pakistan and American foreign policy in Pakistan; however, we need to keep some perspective. It is harsh to say but perhaps she will serve her country better as a martyr than she would have (or ever did) in life. (Probably, however, Pakistan will become even more of a cluster#%@$. Wouldn't it be great if had bothered to stabilize Afghanistan instead of invading Iraq for no reason? Then we wouldn't have to worry so much about Pakistani extremists.)
