Zuma: Regional Powers Must Force Mugabe Into Real Power-Sharing

I have a lot of problems with the putative next president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma. Mainly, he seems to be a bit of a thug.

He was acquitted of raping the HIV-posiive daughter of a friend. During the trial he said that he had taken a shower afterwards to keep from getting AIDS. (Sadly, even this makes him comparably light years ahead of his predecessor, Thabo Mbeki, on the HIV knowledge.) He has been heavy handed in his attempts to grab power, and is too cozy with the South African Communist Party. (The last thing SA - and the region - needs is to have their emerging economy backslide because foreign investment gets worried about the state nationalizing everything.)

However, keeping all of those caveats in mind, I like the noises Zuma is making about forcing ZANU-PF to live up to the power-sharing agreement they made with Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in Zimbabwe. It may take a thug to stand up against the current top thug of southern Africa, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

Powers from the region are meeting this weekend to hopefully thrash out a deal. I pray they do.

One other positive development from Zuma's rise is that his ruling African National Congress party has split thanks to the power struggle between Zuma and Mbeki. This may result in a viable two-party system in South Africa - a welcome development after 14 years of one-party rule. (It was OK when Nelson Mandela was president, but that kind of leader does not come along very often.)

[Oh, and for those of you who are not sure, Africa is a continent, not a country.]

Obamaha

Obama claimed the electoral vote for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District.

I can not tell you how happy that makes me. It is so huge.

Wow. There may really be able to do anything. (Heh.)

"You Can't Beat the Axis If You Get VD."

I ran across this program for a National Academies of Science exhibit of public health posters from around the world through the years.

As with most propaganda, some of these are pretty amusing. (Such as my favorite tag line, which I used for the title of this post.)

Check it out: Iconography of Contagion (PDF).

Obama Has a Good Shot at Winning Omaha!!!!!!!!

McCain is currently up 569 votes in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District with 10-12,000 early votes and 5,200 provisional votes left to count. Obama won 61% of the early votes that have already been counted.

Things look good for Obama to actually win an electoral vote from Nebraska.

I can't tell you how great that makes me feel.

Electoral Scoreboard: 297-139

I'll be updating this map all night (and comparing it with my prediction map below). Feel free to make you own by clicking on the states. Enjoy.

Obama: Vermont, Massachusetts, Illinois, Maine, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, DC, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania (Woo-hoo!), New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Michigan, OHIO, New Mexico, Iowa, Real Virginia

McCain: Kentucky, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Wyoming, North Dakota, Georgia, West (Occupied) Virginia, Louisiana, Kansas, Utah, Texas, Mississippi

9:15 - Both sides have held serve from 2004. No state has changed hands. Obama needs to flip a state or two (hopefully, Florida).

9:27 - The first flip is huge! Ohio. This is also the first deviation from both the 2004 map and my prediction map. But I'm happy to be wrong on this one! Now all Obama has to do is win all the Kerry states and he's got it! Virginia is getting closer with the "Communist" parts still to come in! Things just got better!

9:50 - New Mexico!

10:59 - Virginia goes for Obama!!!!!!!!!!!! California should put him over the top in about 1 minute.

11:00 - Yep. California et al. did it. This is what living during history feels like. Soak it up. (And now I'm going to bed. I'll finish updating th map tomorrow.)

God bless the United States of America.

(Of course, this was the easy part. Now we need to pull together and fix everything in the world.)

Prediction Map: 319-219

And, yes, I'm giving Omaha to Obama. Call me sentimental.

Go Obama!

Dereliction of Duty

Dear Everyone,

I've been terribly remiss in my blogging responsibilities of late. Considering the gravity and importance of this election, I sincerely apologize.

On the other hand, I've been busy; can't you people figure this stuff out for yourselves?

[Actually, considering that Obama looks strong nationwide and in Virginia particularly, and that the VA Senate race is a laffer for Warner, I guess you have figured it out.]

Tomorrow, I promise I will be back on the scene to (hopefully) enjoy the evening.

Go vote!

Love,

Me
