Another Reason to Care about Africa

Because China does.

China is currently dumping money into the Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) to curry favor with the government.

This will result in China getting access to the Ivory Coast's natural resources, including it's undeveloped oil resources.

That's one more source for resources that we we won't have and one more corner of the world where China will have more influence than us.

People don't seem to realize that China is a bigger threat to the US than so-called "Islamofascists" and, not only are we ignoring the threat, we are helping fund it.

Thanks Wal-Mart!

You are absolutely on target with this one. I lived in West Africa, specifically Benin, for a couple of years during the early 80s. The Chinese already had a growing presence there - they had a cigarette factory (Ehuzu cigarettes - Ehuzu means revolution in the Fon language), and a bunch of other investments. This was during the great Sahel drought and while Benin was trying very hard to be a Marxist/Leninist revolutionary state. The West, with the possible exception of France, has ignored Benin for decades. Now Benin's a democracy, and one of the more stable countries in the region, and the Chinese who went in there with the long view are very solidly established.
